What is a Letter of Medical Necessity?

An LMN is a document from a qualified healthcare provider stating that a gym membership is essential for the treatment or prevention of a specific medical condition. Conditions commonly supported by an LMN include:

  • Obesity

  • Hypertension

  • Diabetes

  • Chronic back pain

  • Anxiety or depression

  • Heart disease

This letter justifies the medical necessity of your gym membership, making it a reimbursable expense under HSA/FSA guidelines.

We’ve streamlined the process to make it easy for you:

Tips for a Smooth Reimbursement Process

  • Ensure Documentation is Complete: Your LMN should clearly state your diagnosed condition and the necessity of exercise as part of your treatment plan.

  • Keep Detailed Records: Maintain copies of all receipts and the LMN for your records.

  • Understand Your Plan: Check with your HSA/FSA administrator for any specific requirements or forms needed.

Validity and Renewals

An LMN is typically valid for 12 months. If your medical condition persists, you’ll need to obtain a new letter annually to continue claiming your gym membership expenses.
